Program: How to Engage Residents in Your City in Emergency Preparedness and Response
Program Moderator: Terry Amsler, Program Director of the Institute of Local Government’s Collaborative Governance Initiative

Last April a major news story reported that scientists believe there is a 99 percent chance that an earthquake with a magnitude of at least 6.7 will hit one or more of the major faults in California within the next 30 years. A number of local cities are trying innovative ways to transform residents from potential victims into active partners, with government, in their communities’ emergency preparedness and response efforts. Some of these were the subject of an article in the October issue of “Western City” magazine.
Terry Amsler, Millbrae Councilwoman Marge Colapietro, Burlingame Councilwoman Terry Nagel and Annette Glanckopf of Palo Alto Neighborhoods will share examples and best practices of how local cities are engaging residents in emergency preparedness and response plans and efforts
You’ll learn how to make your residents part of your city’s emergency planning, and you’ll receive copies of emergency preparedness materials designed to grab their attention.
