San Mateo County Council of Cities Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date:    Friday, March 27, 2009
Host City:        San Mateo

Call to Order: Chair Terry Nagel called the SMC Council of Cities meeting to order at 7:00 pm following the reception and SMC City Selection Committee Business Meeting.
Roll Call/Introduction of Guests: Secretary/Treasurer Marge Colapietro called the roll and each senior City Official introduced their guests.
Present: Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, San Bruno, San Carlos, San Mateo, South San Francisco and Woodside.
Absent: East Palo Alto and Redwood City.

Chair Terry Nagel introduced State Assemblyman Jerry Hill and SMC Supervisor Carole Groom.

Welcome Mayor of Host City:
Mayor Brandt Grotte of San Mateo welcomed everyone to San Mateo.  Mayor Grotte took great pride in announcing that the new San Mateo state of the art Police Station will be opening for business very soon, and invited everyone to visit after the official opening.  He also cautioned everyone to pay attention to the traffic stop lights because the city has installed additional cameras to enhance the existing “Red Light Program.”  The Mayor then announced the new tag line for San  Mateo’s downtown marketing program ~ “All the Ingredients” and invited everyone to take the “Restaurant Guide” left at each table setting.

Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the February 27, 2009 were unanimously approved.

Board of Supervisors’ Report:  No report.

Treasurer’s Report: Secretary/Treasurer Marge Colapietro presented the report for the month of February 2009.  She reported a total account balance of $4054.97 and a written distributed.  Marge also presented a research report regarding “Seed Money” in the Council of Cities account maintained in the City of San Mateo Credit Union and also distributed a written report.

Announcements:

  • Chair Terry Nagel gave special thanks to San Mateo Councilman Omar Ahmad for the outstanding job he did in setting-up a new website for SMC Council of Cities.  She invited everyone to visit:  http://www.smccouncilofcities.com A history of the Council of Cities will soon be posted along with more helpful information.
  • Chair Nagel also reported the results of the recent survey emailed to members relative to topics for guest speakers at future meetings included compensation for public employees, high speed rail, public-private partnerships and regional shared services.
  • Jorge Jaramillo, President of the San Mateo County Hispanic Chamber Chamber of Commerce invited all Mayors and Councilmembers to attend the “Mayors’ Diversity Celebration Awards” and event honoring diverse individuals making a difference in our communities.  The event will be on May 7, 2009 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the SMC History Museum in Redwood City. Assemblyman Jerry Hill will be the Master of Ceremony.  Jorge also encouraged all Mayors to submit a nominee to receive an award from their respective city.
  • Assemblyman Hill encouraged everyone to attend this special event and support the great work of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce within our county and in our local communities.
  • Linda Koelling, Peninsula Division President of California League of Cities encouraged everyone to sign-up for the Annual Bocce Ball Tournament in April.  Linda reminded everyone that the event raises money for the League’s PAC’s.

Program: Vice Chairwoman Christine Krolik introduced guest speaker Assemblyman Jerry Hill.

Assemblyman Hill told us of the highlights and pitfalls of the offices he has held, and gave us a front row seat to the recent budget drama in Sacramento.  Assemblyman shared what he believes we can expect from the state budget that was recently passed, and what we can anticipate for the future.  Assemblyman Hill shared some of his guiding principles that he practices throughout his own political career, i.e.: remember who you work for, have courage and know the issues.  He also discussed two Bills that he introduced:  one, that every trauma center in the state should have a heli-pad and another is to require the registrar of voters to let us know if our ballot was counted.  Supervisor Hill thanked everyone for electing him to serve as our Assemblyman.  He reminded everyone about the Special Election on May 19th with his request to pay close attention to Propositions 1A through 1E.

Chair Nagel thanked Assemblyman Hill for his dynamic presentation as did the did the attendees by their generous applause!

Adjournment: Chair Nagel adjourned the meeting at 8:29 pm !!!
